Home, for me, was never quiet.
My family is loud, in the best way — a table always too full, conversations that spill past midnight, laughter you could hear from the street. That was the house I grew up in.
Then I got married, and I moved to the United States. I said goodbye to that noise, that warmth, not knowing yet how loud the silence on the other side would be.
Before my mom left after visiting me, I wrote her a letter and drew the two of us side by side. I promised her I'd keep going. I didn't fully know yet what "keep going" meant.
It was late October, two months after I'd moved to the United States. My mom had just flown back to Mexico after visiting me, and that night I went for my first solo walk alone. At some point I looked up.
There was the moon. The tears came before the thought did: my parents are looking at this exact same moon right now. For a second, it felt like they were walking beside me.
Back in Mexico, I'd already been selling personalized lockets — but they weren't mine. Generic designs, that said nothing about who I was. That night, something clicked: if the moon could make me feel like my parents were still with me, maybe I could make something that did the same for someone else. So I started designing, in the middle of everything else I was figuring out — a new language, a new life. It stopped being about having a job. It became about giving something to anyone else going through what I was going through.

My parents are still in Mexico. I talk to my mom almost every day, she visits often, and I've gone back to see her, my dad, and the rest of my family. The distance doesn't feel like something missing anymore — it feels like proof that love holds, even from far away.
Because sooner or later, we all lose someone close, in one way or another — a move, a goodbye, kids growing up and leaving, a wedding. And love, like the moon, stays right where it's always been. Even when you can't see it.
